While it's easy to see that the this initial event that impacted McLean was the death of his musical idol(s), I strongly believe that for him, each shift in the musical landscape is a day the music died, one that makes him harken back to his original inspiration, Buddy Holly, and relive those same feelings all-over again. What strikes me is that the song is mostly chronological, but always circles back to, "The Day the Music Died." McLean has recently admitted that he was drawing a parallel between political/social changes and the music reflected by those times. It's a fact that this was as much about politics and religion as it was music. This song is full of double-meanings and while some lyrics are left to interpretation, some are clearly concrete. It was meant to reflect the radical changes and the death of the apple pie Americana that so many had placed/misplaced nostalgia upon.
